Internet connection settings

The page sets up the Internet connection of the router.

To be able to access internet and use the router as the entry point to public internet, the device must have a logical internet address, referred to as an IP address.

An IP address can be retrieved in many ways using different methods. The router supports the following methods, Dynamic IP, Static IP and PPPoE. Normally the service provider provides you with instructions on which method to use together with the information needed to setup the service. The router must be assigned an IP address using one of these methods to work properly.

IPv4

Choose Dynamic IP (DHCP) to get an IP address using the DHCP protocol.

Choose Static IP to setup a static IP address and fill in the requested fields,

  • IP address
    		•  The IP address is entered in quad-dotted notation
  • Prefix
    		•  The IP address prefix should be entered as the bit length of the prefix
  • DNS 1
    		•  The IP address is entered in quad-dotted notation
  • DNS 2
    		•  The IP address is entered in quad-dotted notation (optional)

Choose PPP to get an IP address using the PPP protocol and fill in the requested fields,

  • Username
    		•  The username is entered as a text string
  • Password
    		•  The password is entered as a text string

L2TP

L2TP is a protocol required in some networks to get an appropriate IP address that can be used to access the public internet. Normally the service provider provides you with instructions on which method to use together with the information needed to setup the service. When used, it is used in addition to one of the methods defined for the IPv4 setup, such as for instance Dynamic DHCP, which can also be preconfigured on your router in some cases.

Choose Enable L2TP to get an IP address using the L2TP protocol and fill in the requested fields,

  • Server
    		•  Domain name or IP address in quad-dotted notation to the server in the operators network.
  • PPP username
    		•  The username is entered as a text string
  • PPP password
    		•  The username is entered as a text string
  • L2TP secret
    		•  The secret is entered as a text string (optional)
  • IPSEC PSK
    		•  The PSK is entered as a text string (optional)

Further information

Dynamic IP uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to get an IP address from a service in the network. This is a commonly used method and fully automated procedure and requires no further action from the end user.

Static IP means that the IP address is entered manually. Further information must be provided, such as the IP address to the nearest network entity, the gateway address. This option is mainly used for smaller private networks and is in general not the correct option unless you are a person with knowledge of network technology, or have received explicit instructions from your service provider to setup a static IP address together with the IP address and other required information.

PPPoE (Poin to Point Protocol over Ethernet means that the PPP protocol is used to get an IP address from a service in the network. The PPP protocol requires and uses authentication, which means that a username and password is used to authenticate the end user. This is a commonly used method.

Quad-dotted notation is a way to write in IP address (IPv4). The format uses four groups of numbers separated by a “period”. Each group of numbers can have a value in the range 0 to 255. An example of such an IP address is 10.220.1.231.

Domain Name notation is a way to write an IP address in a textual format. The Domain name is automatically translated to an IP address via a DNS (Domain Name Server) service in the network.


L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) means that the traffic to and from your router is tunneled over a network. L2TP also support using IPSec which adds security to the traffic to and from your router.
