Further information
There are two different addressing standards, IPv4 which is the legacy standard and by far the still most used standard, and the new IPv6 standard for addressing the public internet. The reason for a new standard for addresses on the public internet is mainly due to that there are simply more devices that are connected to internet than there are addresses available. Most services on the Internet are only available using IPv4 but IPv6 is slowly gaining ground. Fortunately IPv4 and IPv6 can coexist and be used in parallel. Also many service providers today does not offer support for IPv6, only IPv4. To summarize, the router must have an IPv4 address and may have an IPv6 address as well. If you are not a technical person IPv6 is not necessary.
